How to use Performance Monitor in Windows 7


Type Perfmon.exe in run to open Performance Monitor window in Win 7. In the left pane select User Defined Node. Right Click on it and select New - Data Collector Set.






Give name of your choice and select Create Manually (Advanced) to be able to set parameters on your own.






Select Type of data to be included. Click Next.






Click on Add and select Perormance Counter you would like to log. They could be Memory, Processor usage etc.







Once you have selected all parameters click on OK.






Select the Sample Interval and Units and Click on Next.






Select the Location where you want to save data.






How would you like to run the task? Leave it default if its OK.






You will see New Entry in Right pane. Right Click on  it and Select Start.






Once you are done, Right click again on it and select Stop. The Data log will created and save in specify location. Click on File to view it in Performance Monitor.





Some Useful Shortcuts to run Reliability Monitor and Standalone Performance Monitor via Run.

  • Perfmon /rel : Runs Reliability Monitor.
  • Perfmon /sys: Runs Standalone Performance Monitor
